Local Hero Peggy Oki

We're thrilled to hear that Peggy Oki has been named as a "Local Hero" by the Santa Barbara Independent (scroll halfway down the page to see Peggy!).

Peggy has more than earned this honor with her inspiring & enduring support for protecting cetaceans and ocean life, through her Origami Whales Project… An international campaign, aimed at getting the message across to the International Whaling Commission (IWC), to put a stop to the slaughter of whales and the cruelty of commercial whaling in Japan, Norway and Iceland.

Jon Jones hits the big time with Bentley purchase

Jon Jones hits the big time with Bentley purchase

The UFC works in mysterious ways. To the uninitiated it appears that the UFC's top stars make lousy money in comparison to boxers and other high-level athletes. But then there's that tricky discretionary pay that's kept private.

At UFC 128, UFC light heavyweight champ made $140,000 ($70,000 to show, $70,000 to win). Above, Jon Jones shows off his new $190,000 2012 Bentley Continental GT. Someone's paying him.

It'd be interesting to see if the boxing vs. MMA pay argument would go away with full disclosure of what the UFC pays its fighters.

Either way, good for Jones. The kid's worked hard. He's the rage of the sport. He should buy anything he wants.

A frustrated ?Rampage? talks about transitioning to boxing

Quinton Jackson has made a lot bold statements about the direction of his career and in most cases changed his mind a few days later. Now the 33-year-old is talking about a boxing career. Will he go through with it?

Jackson is annoyed with the direction of MMA. While he's become a one-dimensional fighter, who's always looking to land the right hand, he's seeing the young guns at 205 pounds becoming more and more athletic.

"I hate fighting people who are scared. When you fight somebody who is scared you never know what they're going to do. They turn and run," Jackson told the ESPN U.K. podcast. "That's why I'm gonna go to boxing. I'm gonna try boxing because they've got to stand with you. If I get knocked out I don't care because at least it's a fight."

Jackson is coming off a fight where he couldn't touch UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones for 15-plus minutes. Jones used his 84-inch reach and kicks to keep Jackson at long range. When the space closed, Jackson swung away like a maniac, but Jones just scooted out of the pocket.

Jackson became a crossover star with his role in "The A-Team," but that mean anyone outside of MMA will care if he moves over to boxing?

"I've tried a lot of boxing, I'm falling in love with boxing and I know I can put butts on seats over there." said Jackson.

Keep in mind, Jackson fights at 205 pounds and walks around at anywhere between 225-250 pounds. Boxing's heavyweight division could use an infusion of American draws, but could a guy with zero pro fights in the sport fill anything bigger than a 2,000 seat arena?

On top of that, Jackson will have to leave the UFC to move over to boxing. Based on previous discussions with Zuffa management, there's no way a fighter under contract with the UFC would be allowed to potentially scar his reputation by boxing. Long story short, Rampage will "change his mind" about boxing in the next few days.

Wiman takes rematch with Danzig at UFC on VS 6

Wiman takes rematch with Danzig at UFC on VS 6

The rematch of their controversial fight ended with the same result, as Matt Wiman won a decision over Mac Danzig at UFC on Versus 6 in Washington D.C. Saturday night. It was scored 29-28 on all three judges' cards.

In a round with nonstop action, Wiman started by using a leg kick for a takedown, but when Danzig got to his feet, he punished Wiman with short strikes. Wiman came back with leg kicks and short elbows, while Danzig answered with good movement and strikes. Both fighters had bloody faces by the the time the first round ended.

Wiman showed off great grappling technique in the second, grabbing Danzig's arm for a Kimura. He came close to finishing, but Danzig got out and threw a flurry of punches. Wiman tried for another Kimura, but couldn't get it and the fight stood back up. At that point, the two matched each other strikes for strike.

By the third, the two slowed down but still gave another good round. After they again matched up in striking, Wiman tried to take Danzig down, but ended up with Danzig on top of him. As Wiman tried to stand up, Danzig mounted Wiman's back. With both fighters covered in sweat, Wiman slipped Danzig off of him, and used the top position to land tons of strikes. With his face covered in blood, Danzig worked his way back to his feet. In the last 10 seconds of the bout, Danzig dropped down and grabbed a guillotine, but Wiman flashed a thumbs up to show that he was in no danger of tapping.

Wiman won their first fight at UFC 115 with a technical submission, though Danzig never tapped and wasn't in danger of being choked out. Though it was a close fight, Danzig's win closes the book on his rivalry with Danzig, and allows him to move up in the UFC's stacked lightweight division.

Edwards bounces back, Sass with another sub at UFC on Versus 6

Edwards bounces back, Sass with another sub at UFC on Versus 6

Yves Edwards wasn't going to wilt because of one nasty loss.

The 14-year veteran rebounded from a vicious knockout loss at UFC 131 by pounding out Rafaello Oliveira at the 2:44 mark of the second round in the final undercard fight of UFC on Versus 6 on Facebook.

Edwards (41-17-1) picked up his ninth win with the UFC. An old-timer, Edwards celebrated his 35th birthday yesterday. He first fought for the promotion way back in 2001 at UFC 33. This was a big one for Edwards, who was the victim of a brutal one-punch knockout at the hands of Sam Stout in June.

In the middle of the second round, Edwards landed a huge right to turn the fight in his favor. Oliveira dropped to his knees, but when he bounced back up he was on wobbly legs. He got backed up to the cage and took some more abuse. The fight got back to the middle of the cage and Oliveira tried fighting back by throwing hard shots, but his hands were low. That's when Edwards floored him again by bouncing a left kick off the side of his head.

Oliveira hit the deck and was helpless. Referee Mario Yamasaki watched Edwards land 20 unanswered shots before Oliveira rolled to his stomach and took three more. That was it.

Edwards is a top notch striker, but Oliveira (14-5, 1-4 UFC) held his own early on. The Brazilian came out with some nasty flurries and charged forward throughout much of the first round. Unfortunately, that high pace tired Oliveira, and Edwards began to settle into a rhythm in the final 90 seconds of the first.

Sass got his mitts on Johnson and wouldn't let go

There's no one like Shinya Aoki, but Paul Sass can at least say he's the Aoki of the U.K.

The British submission specialist worked and worked and worked to get Michael Johnson in his grips. Once he did, the ending was inevitable. Sass grinded for 45 seconds to get a good hold of a heel hook. When he did, Johnson had to tap at the 3:00 mark of the first round.

Sass is now 12-0 with 11 submission victories. He's won three straight via heel hook. Before that, he'd ripped off a streak of seven straight triangle choke finishes.

Johnson (9-5) had a good game plan. In the first minute, he stayed on the move and tried to land from a distance. He popped and hurt Sass with some good shots, but anytime the fighters came close together, the Brit was like an octopus. There were limbs coming from everywhere grabbing at Johnson.

Two minutes into the fight,Sass was on his back and trying to pull Johnson into his guard. The American tried several ways of escaping by jumping out of Sass' hold, but could never free himself. That's when Sass first locked onto the ankle.

Johnson, the Season 12 "Ultimate Fighter" runner-up, is now 1-2 with the UFC. This was win No. 2 with the promotion for the 23-year-old Sass.
